It’s Changing?

10/06/2024 by Aruni

It’s Changing?

Picture by Erika Crofut

Sometimes that little sneaky thing called change is hard to spot.
She slithers and slides around,
Doesn’t she?

Personally?
I hardly see it in me.
That’s why I need you.

Culturally?
As Tony Soprano would say,
“For-get-about-it.”

Yet, here’s a memory from my childhood
That might suggest that cultural change can creep forward.
~~~
It’s after school.  Phew.  That’s over.
I rush home from my school,
John James Audubon #42,
Two fast blocks away.
The familiar empty echo meets me in the house,
But it doesn’t open that usual ache in my belly.
Not now.
Mom and Dad are at the store.
Of course.
Working.
Of course.
But I’m good
Because I’m leaving…
Just passing through.
I excitedly change out of school clothes.
I put on my dungarees, my play jacket.
Expectation is in the air.
Galloping down the basement,
I pull my bike effortfully up the back stairs.
We, my bike and I,
Make our way onto the street.
Arthur Avenue.
I gain momentum,
Slide onto the seat
And bike up the two hilly blocks.
No cars.
Never many.
Here is Nay Aug Park.
Almost across from our house.
The band shell sits in the middle of the huge open area.
Concerts come here—that’s not what I remember.
I remember
Me.
I remember
Me
Alone
Here
On my bike.
There are pathways like spokes
Circumnavigating the band shell area.
I love riding up and down them,
Up and down,
Weaving and turning,
Weaving and twisting,
Riding and riding.
Alone with myself
Alone with my fantasy:
I am
A
Royal
Canadian
Mountie.
I am.
My bike
Is a horse.
It is.
My unform,
Scarlet red jacket
Yellow stripes on my
Cool blue pants,
Hold me close.
They do.
I have a sleeping bag,
My gear,
On the back
Of my horse.
I do.
I am off
To save
The damsel,
The woman
In distress.
I am.
I ride and ride
The hills,
The trails
Of Canada,
My horse and I,
We are destined
To find her.
We are destined
To save her.
We are.
And I find her.
I find her.
She finds me.
And I save her.
And she saves me
And we love each other.
And I am whole.
But, oh, no.
It’s not me.
Not really.
This is wrong.
This is bad.
I am
Pretending
To be a boy.
SHHHHHHHH.
Don’t ever let anybody,
Anybody know.
~~~
The deliciousness of this fantasy, even now, six-and-a-half decades later is alive with sensation.
I loved doing this—being this—imagining this—seeing myself—as this.  And yet, the experience continues:

As I take my bike down into the cellar, as I take off my jacket, as I walk into our house,
The house still silent, mom not home yet,
I feel the veil,
The fog,
The ocean
Of shame
Slithering toward me.
Inching toward me.
Creeping up my legs,
My young sweet body
Into my belly,
Shutting down my heart,
Clamping my brain
Closed.

Never
Tell
Anybody.

They
Can’t
Know.

I’m not supposed to be a Royal Canadian Mountie.
I’m a girl.
I’m supposed to be the damsel,
The damsel in distress.

Don’t tell anybody.
Never.
ever.
Let them know.

Never.

 The Band Shell, 2024

Who knew?  This is called the Schimilfenig Pavilion, looking a tad worse for wear 65 years later.  But aren’t’ we all?  Anyway, one could rent it from Scranton, Pa., starting at $159.  It’s never too late to learn stuff.

You can see the path that runs away from the building.  They are many crisscrossing this (what seemed large then) area.  Great stuff for fantasy journeying!

~~~
Ahhhh,
Dear Friends,
There were no images for me to see.
No images of girls loving girls.
I had to imagine myself a boy,
To be able to even imagine
Loving women.
The shame of it!
The burden of that shame
Kept me
Hidden
Inside
Deeply
Deeply inside
For lifetimes.
It is a miracle
I found my way
Into life.
~~~
But…and…
Its changing.

Here is a cool and short video from NPR, so worth watching.  Is it a game-changer?  Is the beginning of new moment?  The Girl takes the spotlight!

The Legend of Zelda is an action-adventure game franchise, debuting in 1986, highly successfully continuing to this day.  For four decades the hero has been Link, the green-hatted male protagonist. For four decades he has been saving the world from evil and rescuing Princess Zelda.  But now!  Zelda grabs her wand, saves Link and saves the world, in their newest release, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

The girl saves the day!

Listen and watch Morning Edition host Leila Fadel discuss the significance of this shift with Amanda Cote, author of Gaming Sexism: Gender and Identity in the Era of Casual Video Games.

Friends,

The leaves are changing,
The colors of autumn emerging.

Against blue sky,
Golden and yellowed
And red-ish leaves
Shimmer.

Change is a living thing.
It is happening.

With gratitude,
With possibility,
With wise hope—

May the words we share benefit all people.

Blessings,
Aruni

Beloved Community

02/25/2024 by Aruni

Beloved Community

Dr. Martin Luther King says:
“The Beloved Community is a realistic vision of an achievable society,
one in which problems and conflicts exist
but are resolved peacefully and without bitterness.
In the Beloved Community caring and compassion drive political polices that support
 the worldwide elimination of poverty and hunger and all forms of bigotry and violence.
The Beloved Community is a state of heart and mind,
a spirit of hope and goodwill that transcends all boundaries and barriers
and embraces all creation.
At its core, the Beloved Community is an engine of reconciliation.
This way of living seems a long way from the kind of world we have now,
 but I do believe it is a goal that can be accomplished
through courage and determination and through education and training,
 if enough people are willing to make the necessary commitment.”

I read these words.
My heart stirs.

The Beloved Communities in My Life—

Girl Scout Camp Archbald
My little-girl, tightly-squeezed-shut heart relaxes.

The things that seem to matter,
The things that separate me,
My differences,
Don’t suffocate me here.

My stuttering,
My fear of talking,
My wanting to kiss girls.

Here,
I am able.
Here I am competent.

Here in the neutrality
And the inclusiveness
Of this good place,

Here on these sacred trails,
Here in this sweet Lake Ely,
Consecrated by decades
Of girl scout pee—

Here I am free.
Here I am redeemed.

Here I am given
A piece,
Just a sliver
More
Of who
I really am.

Here
I belong.

I am redeemed.
I am found
Through this
Kind community.
~~~
The Kripalu Ashram
At first,
My self-consciousness
Reigns.
I didn’t know how—
To?
Do?
What?
To do yoga?
To meditate?
To be spiritual?
Isn’t that why
I’m here,
To learn?
But I didn’t know how
To
Not
Know
How.
Oh, so slowly,
I learn.
Slowly,
Oh,
So
Slowly,
My voice emerges.
Slowly
So
Slowly,
I relax
Into not knowing.
Slowly,
So
Slowly
I
Relax
Into being
One
Among
Many.
Into enjoying
My self.
Into savoring
The journey.
Into caring
For others.
Into opening
My heart.
Into caring for myself.
My voice,
My own voice
Strengthens.
Slowly
Through
The love,
Through
Commitment,
Through intentions,
I am home.
More home
Inside and out.
I am redeemed.
I am found
Through the love
Of this community.
The Kripalu Programs I Teach.
What is the world
Into which we choose to live?
Let’s create that world
For these few days
Together.
What do we choose?
We choose
Safety.
We choose
Equity.
We choose
Non-judgment
And
Kindness.
We choose kindness.
We choose ourselves
As we are.
We choose each other
As we are.
Then everything,
All of who we really are
Can emerge.
A brief, yet everlasting
Beloved community is born.
We are redeemed.
We are home.
We are found
Through the love
Of our Kripalu program community.
Friends, here is a classic from the brilliant, the profound Bob Marley.  In my heart, this song lands like a musical iteration of Dr. King’s message.  Please listen with the lyrics (below).  Enjoy:
Redemption Song
Lyrics—Redemption Song
Old pirates, yes, they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly
Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it’s just a part of it
We’ve got to fulfill the book
Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Whoa! Have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause none of them-ah can-ah stop-ah the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it’s just a part of it
We’ve got to fulfill the book
Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
All I ever have
Redemption songs
These songs of freedom
Songs of freedom
~~~
Friends,

What communities
Of heart and mind
Have blessed you?

How do you take
Those blessings
Into the world?

How do you,
How do we
Continue
To create
Beloved
Communities?
~~~
Dear Friends,
Grant us
The serenity
To accept the things
We cannot change,
The courage
To change the things
We can.
And the wisdom
To know
The difference.
May all beings
Be blessed
By the words
We share.
May the highest unfold
For all,
Aruni
The Strength of Surrender
01/08/2023 by Aruni
The Strength of Surrender
This blog post is also available on my Facebook page to make sharing it with friends and family easy for you to do.
Dear Friends,
If I didn’t believe that
Life is coming to heal us…
If I didn’t believe that,
Even and especially
In the pain,
There is new life…
If I didn’t believe that
The journey we are on
Is one of healing,
Of
Wholeness,
Of the
Recovery
Of ourselves—
No matter what is happening…
If I didn’t believe this
I could not
Possibly
Get out
Of bed,
Put on shoes,
And move
Onward
With
The
Day.
~~~

I believe.

I believe
The circumstances
Of my life,
Of your lives
Are offering us
Doorways
To healing
And
Wholeness.

Certainly,
 I have
Experimented
Plenty
With the
Life strategy
Of trying
To change
The people,
The situations
Around me.

I have concluded
This is not
An effective
Life
Plan.

REALITY IS RELENTLESS.
It wins.

If reality is my partner,

Can I
Be present
And
Bend
With
The
Wind?

Can
I
Soften into the sensations,

Relaxing as best I can
Into the moment.

Surrendering
Into
The
Moment.

I practice,

As I can…
And
When
I can.

And when I can’t,

Is it possible—
To be okay,
To be fine,
To accept
Even that,

Even my own
Damn
Humanity?

~~~
Dear Friends,
Like the tree
In the wind,
May we bend
With what is.
Like the tree
May we stand
Grounded
In ourselves.
May we reach out
To the skies above us.
May we draw sustenance
From the earth.
May we strengthen
From our surrendering
Into
The
Winds
of life.
May we give ourselves
A giant pass,
A massive break—
And keep practicing
Being
Right here,
Right
Now.
~~~
Friends,
Here is a poignant and powerful video from singer, songwriter, woman-empowerment-beacon, India Arie.

Join her as she offers her gratitude to Wayne Dyer, spiritual teacher, with a powerful humility that  illuminates the power of shared inspiration.

Listen as she sings her song, “I Am Light”, and—she is.

And so are we.

Watch Here

~~~
Dear Friends,
May the time
We spend together
Benefit all beings.
With gratitude,
With possibility,
With wise hope—
