You are the Eternal Music

04/28/2024 by Aruni

“You are the Eternal Music.”*

Life is real.
Reality wins.

We know it’s temporary.
We know it’s ALL temporary.
We know WE’RE ALL temporary.

As the Buddhists practice,
We know these bodies,
Our bodies are fragile.
We know they will come,
And they will go.

We know the people we love,
The things we care for,
The children we raise,
The parents who raised us,
We know we are all passing through.

We understand impermanence.
And then—something happens.

And then,
Something changes.
Someone we love gets diagnosed.
Someone we love dies.

And the knowing,
The understanding
Dives deeper,
Deep inside our hearts.

This new visceral understanding
Of impermanence
Breaks our hearts open.

Impermanence.
The state,
The fact
Of only lasting
For
A
Limited
Period
Of
Time.

~~~
Buddha tells us:
Whatever has the nature of arising
Has the nature of ceasing,
That does
Say it all,
Doesn’t it?
It seems being alive, we must work contradictorily to this statement.
We must forge on.
And forget.
Our essential nature,
That we are born
To die.
~~~
And here is Guthema the poet, with a beautiful and needed reframe.  Truly, dear folks, I so needed to hear this today, in this very moment.  I am blessed to share it with you:

What a relief
to realize that
you are not the one
who is getting older or
younger –
You are not the one who
dies or who is born.
This is because you are
not the body.
That is not what you are.
Instead you are the
space on which
the body manifests itself.
You are the eternal
music.
~~~
Speaking of eternal music, David Newman, beloved kirtan leader, chanter, teacher, community organizer, husband and father is that music.  Five weeks after receiving his diagnosis, David died on April 18.
He initiated the Stay Strong Project and released this video in 2011.  Luminaries from the world of kirtan** joined him for this heart-filled, energizing prayer.  One hundred per cent of its proceeds were dedicated to Global Green.
As you listen to Stay Strong, I dare you to not dance yourself round and round, and perhaps notice a tiny trickle of tear or two:
Dear Friends,
What are we to do?
How are we to make
Sense of this fragile
Life of ours?
I choose kindness.
I choose practice.
I choose possibility.
I choose myself.
I choose community.
I choose healing.
I choose loving.
I choose surrender.
Care to join me?
May our time together
Benefit all beings,
Aruni
P.S.
I might sound strong and boisterously alive.
Yes…and…
I am also terrified and anxious.
All true—
All sacred—
All, inevitable.
And Why Would I Ever Doubt? Because I’m Human!
And Why Would I Ever Doubt?
Because I’m Human!
Sometimes I go about with pity for myself
and all the while
Great Winds
are carrying me
across the sky.
Ojibway Saying
Evidenced-based data.
Fills my life.
I have decades of experience
That tells me,
That fills me with the knowing
That all is well,
Regardless of what
Is happening
Around me.
That I am being
Carried
Across the sky
By something
So much
Greater
Then my own will.
And why would I ever doubt?
Because I am human.
I believe,
I trust,
I surrender,
I love.
I get scared.
I shut down.
I pull away.
I isolate.
Because I am human.
I am touched by someone,
Something,
Red-winged blackbirds
Filling up the wetland
With song.
Someone smiling,
A dog wiggling.
and I am full and whole and alive and trusting and all-one.
And I get scared.
I forget.
I pull away.
I hide.
Because I am human.
Dear Aruni,
Dear Folks,
Dear Everybody,
PERMISSION TO BE HUMAN
IS FULLY GRANTED.
No bad parts, right?
The anxiety is simply
A breath away
From surrender.
No bad parts, right?
The fear is
The other side
Of trusting.
Give us the courage
And the willingness
To be okay!
With!
Ourselves!
No matter what
Part of our self
Is showing up.
May there be Kindness,
Softening around.
Relaxing into
What is revealing itself.
And then?
We are restored.
We are renewed.
We notice—
We are
Being carried
Across
The great sky.
Okay.  Here is my hero, Pema Chodron.  I adore the way she teaches—and the bar is high for me.  I love her response to her students.  She cracks herself up when she teaches, which I find beyond-endearing and profoundly authentic.  She is so practical, making the profound so easily accessible.  Pema simply opens the floodgates of my heart.
This is my favorite, my FAVORITE paragraph in the universe.  If I was stranded on a desert island, if I was isolated in a room for ever and for always, this is the ONE PARAGRAPH I would want to have with me.  Here’s Pema:
“But loving-kindness toward ourselves doesn’t mean getting rid of anything.  It means that we can still be crazy after all these years.  We can still be angry after all these years.  We can still be timid or jealous or full of feelings of unworthiness.  The point is not to try to change ourselves.  Meditation practice (spiritual practice) isn’t about trying to throw ourselves away and to become something better.  It’s about befriending who we are already.  The ground of practice is you or me or whoever we are right now, just as we are.  That’s the ground, that’s what we study, that’s what we come to know with tremendous curiosity and interest.”
From Awakening Loving-Kindness
~~~
Wait.  Did Pema just say, this is not about becoming something better, something different?
This is about befriending who we already are?
With curiosity?
With interest?
Not with shame and self-flagellation?

Pema.
You rock.

Aruni.
You rock.

Each and every one of you.
Each and every one of us:

YOU ROCK.

WE ROCK.

We are on the journey.
We are practicing.

With gratitude,
Possibility,
With
 Wise hope—

May all beings be blessed
By our sharing together,

Aruni

10,000 Joys & 10,000 Sorrows

10,000 Joys & 10,000 Sorrows

Moonrise

          “When you open your heart, you get life’s ten thousand joys, and ten thousand sorrows.”

Taoist sage Chuang Tzu

I just ruminated
For 30 hours,
Intricately planning

A detailed,
Perfect solution
To
Something that
Didn’t
Even
Happen.

Oh, friends, the sorrows I bring myself, doubting life’s capacity.
Doubting my own.
Oh, friends, those self-inflicted sorrows.

So, we practice.  It’s what we do.  We practice leaning away from our expired behaviors, the ones that once supported us, the ones that do not support us now.

Like old, expired food in the refrigerator, we practice releasing behavior and bringing in new ways of responding.

Those self-inflicted sorrows.

~~~
And then, oh, friends, the external sorrows.
The inevitability of our aging, our dying,
Living and witnessing the losses, the heartbreaks.
The inevitability of sorrows.
The inevitability of sorrows,
Our human dilemma
~~~
Yet now, oh, friends, now.

Now we share something else.
Now we share the intensity
The immensity
Of cosmic sorrow.

We share each other’s pain.
And what a time it is.
What a time
To bear witness.

Can this be who we are?

As a species, can it be?
Are we really a people who think killing other people will bring…..what?
Freedom?  Safety?

As a species, can it be?
Are we really a people who pour gasoline on
The flames of separation
Of hatred,
Of genocide,

Thinking that
Is the solution?

Are we really?

We are here to bear witness to the larger, the cosmic sorrows.
We always did—we always were.

Now, the intensity increases.
Now, the darkness,
The hopelessness
Settles.

Now,
We feel the pain of others in serious harm’s way.
We share the pain.

~~~
And it’s all true!
The more we open our lives up,
The more we choose a path of presence, of being with what is,
The more joys emerge, too.
Today?  Today alone, in these past three hours since my rising?
What were the joys?
Nik the Tiny Dog galloping up and down the hallway,
Shaking her toy with total commitment,
Total abandonment
Total engagement.
Thank you.
The lightening of the day,
From darkness to light,
Thank you.
The soft warm home I leave,
The crisp cool air I breathe.
Thank you.
Thank you for the joys.
Thank you for the sorrows.
We get it all.
~~~

Did you have a cool-things-to-read-in-high-school-phenomenon?
We did. (We = me + Gladys.)

Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger—oh, so cool.  I was Holden Caulfield.  Or, perhaps more truthfully, a wannabe.

Atlas Shrugged, although I never really managed to wrap my head around it.  The concept of the book was much cooler than the book itself.

Then, The Prophet by Kahlil Gilbran—that was cool.

Although Gladys, my monogamous friend since age 8, my official life archivist (do you have a friend who remembers everything?  She is My Gladys), she has unusually limited memory of The Prophet.  Which shakes my own belief in my memory.  She believes one of our Girl Scout Camp counselors read it to us.  I surrender and choose that as my memory, too.

Sorry, I do digress.
Initially I considered The Prophet so cool and poetic.
Then I grew into a slight embarrassment of it.  I got too cool.  It sounded too cheesy, too corny.

Today, here is The Prophet.  Today, I think this is beautiful:
~~~
On Joy and Sorrow
Then a woman said, Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow.
And he answered:
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.
By Kahlil Gilbran
~~~

Today I end with this interpretation of Jewish liturgy—

May you shelter us with your presence.
May you let our burdens release.
May you guard and protect our hearts and our souls.
Please hold all of us—
All of us
Beneath the wings
Of your peace.

All blessings,
Aruni
