Right Here, Right Now

05/31/2026 by Aruni

Right Here, Right Now

My first addiction was fantasy.

Reality was a pretty rocky and unhospitable place for me as a kid in the 1950’s. All I really wanted to do was kiss girls. I was positive some disgusting and despicable disease lived inside of me, causing this. I tried to be super-invisible, because…if YOU knew what I WAS thinking….I would die.

I mean, die. I would be dead. I could not possibly live through that exposure.

Unfortunately, my commitment to super-invisibility was futile, doomed from its onset. My stuttering, with every utterance, with every attempted sound, spotlights seemed to manifest around me. There was nowhere to go.

So, my silent and secret plan was, to remain as unseen as possible, and, most importantly, to not talk. Talking was Doom.

I hid so well from you that I was lost to myself.

In my memory, I spent a lot of time alone. My parents worked full, long days in my dad’s corner grocery store, the Colfax Market, on the corner of Colfax Avenue and Linden Street. My monogamous friend, Gladys, since she lived in another part of town, was a weekend friend.

After surviving a day at John James Audubon School #42, I would run the three blocks home, pull off my “school clothes”, and grab my “play clothes”. Jeans, sneakers, a t-shirt, weather dependent. I would zoom down to the basement, somehow manage to yank and pull my bike up the four basement tricky steps, and ride across the street, to Nay Aug Park.

Just a few blocks up from my house on Arthur Avenue, the Nay Aug Park Band Shell stood proudly in the center of a series of narrow, spoked paths. I would ride up and down, in and around those spokes, those paths, and I was positive, POSITIVE I was a Royal Canadian Mountie, riding my horse, out to rescue the damsel in distress.

I was obsessed with the television show, Sargent Preston and King of the Yukon, where Mountie Preston and his beloved dog Yukon King along with his faithful horse, Rex, kept the Yukon safe from evil (wherever and whatever that might be).

I rode and pretended, I rode and hoped, I rode and rode and wanted so much to be anybody but who I seemed to be. I wanted to wear a cool red Mounties’ jacket, have a best friend dog, a faithful horse, and, most importantly, to have the capacity to save women. I rode until exhausted. I rode until dinner time—home by 5-ish, to help Mom, who would anxiously and quietly rush in from the store about 5:30, a paper bag full of groceries, to make dinner, which had to be served at 6:00, when my Dad came home from the store. He would eat, take a nap on the couch, and go back to the store, to stand there and wait for customers, home at 9:00. Only to do it again the next day.

I’ve earned my worker-bee status honorably.

My night-times were rich with fantasy. In bed, full of secret silent shame, I conjured up fantasies of rescuing even more distressed women. The saving-women-theme was always loud in me. I had to be a boy in my fantasies, which I knew was beyond-wrong. But how else? How else might I kiss a woman?

Only boys got to kiss girls.

And on it went. My only shield to protect myself from unbearable shame and self-embarrassment was to tell myself, “I’m writing a story. I’m writing a story.” In that story, I just happened to always be the hero, the central figure.

A word about summers. They were liberation. Girl Scout Camp Archbald probably saved my life. There, I played. I shined. I connected, sort of. I was a part of, kind of. I was always in love with one counselor each year; my monogamous fantasies lived, carrying me through the painful school years.

Miss Uns, Miss Kitty, Miss Kathy….one a year, I loved each so committedly, so dearly.

And on it went.

With my big sister

~~~
As I got older, fantasy got more constricted, more subdued, more debilitating, and I, more choked by its shame. It wasn’t until I came out as a lesbian feminist in the early 1970’s, that things began to shift. And then, thankfully, eventually and blessedly, I got sober, which led me to this thing called:
Reality.
Hum.
A thousand years later I found myself at Kripalu Center.
In the Berkshires.
I found myself there.
Myself found me.
An ongoing theme, talked about a lot, seemed to be: BEING PRESENT IN THE MOMENT.
Like, this moment.
Like, Right Here, Right Now.
Hum.
~~~

Here’s what I now believe:

Life happens in the moment. Beauty lives in the moment. Joy, pleasure, bliss, all are experienced in the moment. Certainly, spiritual connection emerges in the moment. The present moment is the doorway to an energetic and vibrant sliver of life, one moment, one breath at a time.

The cost of not being present in the moment? Stifling ourselves and our life force, removing ourselves from the power and the healing possibilities of what is no matter what is happening, physical illness, living in the past, focusing with anxiety on the future.

And so on.

Okay. Great. So, how do we practice?

We move our bodies to quiet our minds.

We use prayer, mantra.

Yoga, meditation.

Nature.

We notice without judgment.

We hug cats.

We talk to our dogs.

We just practice.

What about you, dear friends?

How do you practice?

~~~
Today, I absolutely and completely believe that Reality gives me exactly what I need to become more of who I really am. I believe this. And I forget it a thousand times a day.
I practice remembering.
~~~

Friends, obviously, we were meant to hear the following song, We Shall be Known, since two different people sent me two separate links. I find the song powerfully touching. Here is the Thrive Choir, now called Wild Choir.

“In this Great Turning, we shall learn to lead with love.”

~~~
Friends,
May we be present.
May we be whole.
May we ride the waves of our lives.
May we live in peace,
No matter what we are given.
May all beings benefit from our shared words.
Blessings, all—
“So Why Not Just Show Up?”*
“So Why Not Just Show Up?”*
Title Quote by Roshi Joan Halifax
Oh, dear friends, hello.
It feels to me like weeks have passed since last week’s blog. Do you relate to that time-distortion-syndrome?
I was blessed and privileged to be immersed in Kripalu experiences this past week, first in the Inner Quest over the long weekend and then a delightful, deep and rich R&R class midweek.
And this blog! It is always for me a dive into a Kripalu experience. I learn so much from writing every week.
I am grateful to you who read it, who give me the opportunity to speak my truth, as well as those of you who come to my programs.
This past week, I learned so much in these two programs.
I recognize the power of people coming together, with intentionality and with willingness, to look inside.
I recognize the power of people coming together, with intentionality and with willingness, to look at others.
To listen to themselves.
To listen to others.
To receive themselves.
All parts.
To receive others.
All parts.
I recognize the power of people coming together and building the world we want to live in, if only for those 90 minutes, if only for those three days. If only for a brief blog-read.
I recognize the blessing and the privilege it is for me to be present, to support, to help create, to help mold those experiences.
In a lifetime full of blessings, I am forever blessed by being a member of the Kripalu Faculty.
And I am forever blessed to be able to offer core legacy teachings to you.
In the giving, there is profoundly deep receiving.
~~~

If you don’t know me, please know that I suffered with profound stuttering from early childhood through young and mid-adulthood.

I name this today, to bring that child, that terrified kid, that awkward teenager, that furious adult, into this conversation.

My terror of people stemmed from this root cause; I didn’t want to talk to you. I didn’t want to have to try to say words to you. Then you would then see me. Then you would KNOW. I’m not sure what you would know—but you would.

What a trip, what a blessing, what a mitzvah* it is to have outlived those recurring traumas and to know, oh, so deeply:

I am so privileged to talk with you.

To write these blogs. To teach these programs.

I am blessed to do this work with you.

And—you all give me hope.

You all give me hope.

~~~
Roshi Joan Halifax from Upaya Zen Center talks about “wise hope”, hope that keeps us plugged into the moment, hope that gives us the energy to do the next best thing, hope that launches us into right action.
Kripalu program participants… dear folks who read this blog,
You give me wise hope.
Thank you,
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you for trusting me.
~~~

Here’s a perfect article about wise hope from Roshi Joan, from the Lion’s Roar magazine. Please enjoy.

~~~
What would it look like in your life today to practice wise hope? Just for a few moments? Be specific.
Playing for Change is the most amazing non-profit organization, committed to making music around the world, to having musicians from many countries come together to create music.
Here’s a rousing and strong selection, Riders on the Storm:
~~~

Dear Friends,

Roshi Joan encourages us:

So Why Not Just Show Up?

Let’s practice just getting there,

Just getting to the moment.

Let’s practice,

Finding our way.

Relaxing into the moment as it is.

In gratitude,

In possibility,

In wise hope,

May all beings benefit from our time together.

Blessings, all—

Pink Snow at Sunset

12/07/2025 by Aruni

Pink Snow at Sunset

Around sunset yesterday, the all-day snow began slowing herself down. Hallelujah. The light in the day began to dramatically and quickly change. I stepped outside and was instantly enveloped in awe. Pink snow! The entire landscape was pink.

Pink snow. Remarkable.

This picture is not filtered. This shows us the brilliance and the magic of our glorious planet.

~~~
Dear Folks,
How has your week unfolded?
Where has it taken you?
Where has this week taken me?
I have been practicing, oh, so unbelievably imperfectly
Being right here
In this moment.
I have been practicing not making this moment wrong.
I have been practicing not making the people and the things in this moment wrong.
I have been practicing coming forth in the moment with kindness,
No matter what is happening.
Being human!
Ekkkkkkkkkk.
What a schlep.
You know the word schlep?
Yiddish = to walk a tedious or difficult journey.
In 12 Steps there is a fantastic line about:
“….trudging the Road of Happy Destiny”.
That so resonates with me today.
I am trudging.
The full quote is:
“We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny.”*
Sometimes, it is just an f___ing trudge, right?
Sometimes, it’s snowy and icy and slippery and cold.
Sometimes, right?
And sometimes,
It is not.
This week seemed extreme.
It landed for me as—too-too-hard.
It wasn’t.
It just felt that way.
So, I trudged
And I did my best
And I had to offer amends to a few people
And I did.
And I continue to practice.
Just practice.
Living right here.
Permission to be human—
Is fully granted.
Then I washed in pink snow.
Happy destiny reemerged.
~~~

And you?

Where did your week take you?

What did you practice?

~~~
One of my favorite things about winter is truly
Watching my wacky dog dash and run and bolt around like a wild thing—
OH, MY GOODNESS!
I’M HAVING A FLASHBACK TO THE ‘60’s, (please forgive me)
Remember this song?
WILD THING. YOU MAKE MY HEART SING.
YOU MAKE EVERYTHING. GROOVY.
That is my dog Nik.
She absolutely makes everything groovy for me.
Let’s dedicate this song to our animal companions, the ones that open our hearts and crack us up, and continue to remind us what is important.
The animals that teach us and heal us.
~~~

Oh, friends. I am all over the place,

Kind of like my week.

Speaking of the wonder of the universe, let’s look to Bob Sima to ground us.

Here is his very lovely song/video called Holy Green Tree.

Prepare for a shift of energy and focus.

Here’s Bob, to take us to the Holy Green Tree.

~~~
Looking inside a drawer, I just—this moment— found a pack of Post-It’s—
A sickly pea-green in color—
Untouched but for the top sticky note—
Which declared, in my brazen, wildish hand:
THE LIFE I AM LEADING IS SO BEYOND ANYTHING I COULD HAVE IMAGINED.
This, along with all the pieces of this disjointed week and this disjointed blog,
Is true.
It’s all true.
~~~

Friends,

To end our time together,

Let’s remember gratitude—

Thank you for everything

You’ve given us.

Thank you for everything

You’ve taken from us.

Thank you for everything

That’s left.

Give us the courage

And the strength

To move forward into

What

Might

Be.

May all beings benefit from our time together.

Stay blessed,

Aruni

“To Meet (Yourself) Exactly Where You Are”*

11/30/2025 by Aruni

“To Meet (Yourself) Exactly Where You Are”*

With Astonishing Tenderness –

By Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer

When, in the middle of the night,

you wake with the certainty you’ve

done it all wrong, when you wake

and see clearly all the places you’ve failed,

in that moment, when dreams will not return,

this is the chance for your softest voice—

the one you reserve for those you love most—

to say to you quietly, oh sweetheart,

this is not yet the end of the story.

Sleep will not come, but somehow,

in that wide awake moment there is peace—

the kind of peace that does not need

everything to be right before it arrives.

The peace that comes from not fighting

what is real. The peace that rises

in the dark on its sure dark wings

to meet you exactly as you are.

~~~
To meet you exactly where you are.
This is not about changing ourselves.
This is not about abandoning ourselves in the moment.
This is not about adjusting ourselves so we can then become “spiritual”.
This journey that we are on, you and me and us, is about finding our way through life,
Life as it is.
The way out of it is through it.
To live into the moment.
With gentleness.
With kindness.
With commitment.
When we are able.
When we are not able,
With breath and kindness,
Softening and relaxing,
And practicing again.
~~~

Here is Pema Chodron, my personal hero, who absolutely lands it for me:

“Loving kindness towards ourselves doesn’t mean getting rid of anything. It means we can still be crazy after all these years. We can still be angry after all these years. We can still be timid or jealous or full of feelings of unworthiness. The point is not to try to change ourselves. It isn’t about throwing ourselves away and becoming something better. It is about befriending who we are, right here and right now.”

Pema Chodron

Awakening Loving-Kindness

~~~
For me, writing is a process of integration. It shows me what I don’t know that I know; it takes me deeper, wider inside my experience. If writing brings you solace or insight, here are some contemplation questions to ponder. Utilize them in whatever way they might support you:
  • What are the thoughts that hold you hostage? What’s their content, their topic?
  • How do you respond to these thoughts?
  • What gifts might these thoughts inevitably offer you?
  • Can you imagine any other way to respond to them?
~~~

I am finding that getting used to the darker and darker afternoons, the colder and colder mornings seem a harder adjustment for me this year. As I ride the waves of that transition, this song has brought me great comfort this week.

Here is Witch Hazel by Priscilla Herdman, Anne Hills, & Cindy Mangsen:

~~~
Dear Friends,
And you will not be injured by this dark and troubled time*……..
Celebrating the darkness as well as the light,
Honoring the fear as well as the faith.
One step at a time,
May we find our way.
May all beings benefit from our shared words.
Blessings,
Aruni
A Potpourri of a Post
06/01/2025 by Aruni
 A Potpourri of a Post
Potpourri=
a mixture or collection of seemingly unrelated items,
an unusual assortment.
Yep.
That pretty much
Speaks to my week.
I’m here.
I’m there.
I’m all
Over
The
Place.
But I was
THERE
When I was
There.
And I was
HERE
When I was
Here.
That’s good news,
Right?
I felt solid in my
There-ness,
In my
Here-ness,
Feeling present
In the wide range,
Of the week’s
Offerings.
Here are a variety of things
I have been pondering,
Considering,
Wondering
About
This
Week.
~~~

That damn moment—

We can’t control the moment.

Have you noticed?

Reality wins.

She is relentless.

But we can partner with it.

We can cooperate with the moment.

We can practice relaxing

Rather than resisting,

Letting it come

Letting it go.

Breathing helps.

Softening helps.

Relaxing into it

Helps,

Like on the yoga mat.

Here is a short mediation/reminder, Right Here, Right Now:

Listen Here

~~~
Shifting gears…
I started playing the guitar when I was eight years old.  I wanted to be a cowboy—it seemed to be the answer to all my problems.  (I didn’t know the word lesbian.  Cowboy seemed like the appropriate doorway.)
My first guitar! I will never forget Mr. Gallucci, my teacher, handing it down to me, arriving over my head and into my arms, sent from Heaven.  On its dark, fake-wood body was a stencil of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco.  I was transfixed, fully hooked.  I took lessons every Wednesday afternoon through grade school and high school.
I played quietly, always in my room, door closed, never for another person (never!), hunched over my guitar, both feeling and hearing the music and in my own way, being the music.  It got me through so much of the pain of those early years of exclusion.
When I went to college, I left my beautiful Gibson gut string behind me.  And that was pretty much that.  Throughout my adult life, I would play compulsively for three months, skip the next three years, and continue that obsessive, inconsistent cycle throughout the decades.
But now I have been playing!  Consistently and with such pleasure, I’ve been taking wonderful and engaging  classical lessons.  I adore my teacher, a funny and wise and skillful man, much more talkative than Mr. Galucci.
Which brings me to folk music: as a child of the 60’s I was committed.  I believed in its spirit, its counter-culture messages.
Peter, Paul and Mary, oh, Peter, Paul and MARY.  The first concert I ever saw in the Catholic Youth Center gym—was it 1965?.  From that moment onward I was secretly convinced Mary Travers and I would live happily ever after.  She was my first committed and monogamous crush.  We were together in this way for many years.
Of course, I loved Simon and Garfunkel, on and on.  Judy Collins, who once picked my scarf off the floor at a meeting we were both sharing, and offered it back to me, saying, “This is yours, dear.”  How prophetic.
And of course, there was always Joan Baez.  She never took Mary’s place in my heart, but oh!  Her music.
Confession.  I have been listening compulsively to this song throughout the week.  Most of my most delicious music listening is in my vehicle.  My beloved Subaru.  (Did you just think, of course?  On the Subaru part?)
It’s slightly embarrassing to publicly disclose again my compulsive nature of music listening.  When a song is working, (touching me, stopping me, opening me), it’s all I want to hear.  Why listen to anything else?  And, I’m an addict.  So of course I would want more.
I offer this song to your heart.  Listen to it.  Listen to her guitar.  It is, in my heart, wonderous.
~~~

Dear Friends,

Wishing us

Peace

And

Ease

No matter

The

Externals.

Wishing us

Quiet

And

Comfort

No matter

The chaos.

Wishing us

The willingness

And

The

Strength

To keep

Practicing,

Being

Right

Here

Right now,

No matter

What

Life

Is

Offering,

May we

Be right here

And

Right

Now.

May all beings benefit from our time together.

Stay blessed,

Aruni
