Self-Awareness not Self-Improvement

10/26/2025 by Aruni

Self-Awareness not Self-Improvement

Sunset of a Lifetime Over Wetlands

Oh, friends. Hello.

I had this remarkable weekend at Kripalu, creating the Inner Quest with wonderous people, just the right people.

It was powerful and right and effortful……

And completely not effortful at all, in the same moment.

I came home.

I had a tiny crash, indulged in some Netflix-ing, some good enough food eating.

Not a big crash.

But now—now I face a big workday—and I feel slightly freaked.

I am tired.

I have a whispering headache, a personal villain.

As a limited caffeine person, having a little caffeine just doesn’t work.

Damn it.

And you know what?

So what.

And you know what?

It will pass.

It always passes.

I’m remembering this fabulous quote by Pema Chodron, a massive hero of mine.

Here’s Pema:

“We already have everything we need. There is no need for self-improvement. You can feel as wretched as you like, and you’re still a good candidate for enlightenment. You can feel like the world’s most hopeless basket case, but that feeling is your wealth, not something to be thrown out or improved upon……

All the time our warmth and our brilliance are right here. This is who we really are. We are one blink of an eye away from being fully awake.”*

Right here, right now.

Breathe and relax.

Right here, right now.

Notice and give it back.

Nothing much to do but allow the day to move me forward.

Nothing much to do but to show up as best I can.

It’s Wednesday.

Then it will be Thursday.

Friday, we believe, will come after that.

I find comfort in that.

How might you allow yourself to be exactly where you are today?

Consider.

Any acts of self-kindness you might offer yourself?

I will color-code my time commitments for the week.

(Makes me feel safer.)

I will walk the dog and love her adorable-ness.

I will show up as best I can.

I will come home and eat easy food.

I will do my best,

Without forcing without pushing.

~~~
And music. Ah, music. It so helps. I saw these two profound musicians in concert a few weeks ago, and I’ve been comforted by their guitars, their musicality ever since.
Here is their beautiful cover George Harrison’s classic, While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
Listen to their guitars—especially the end:
Dear Friends,
Ahhhhh.
One breath.
One step.
One moment
At a time.
That really is all
That is asked of us.
See it happening.
We are practicing.
It is happening.
This is what practicing looks like.
May all beings benefit from our shared words.
Stay blessed,
Aruni
Hello to all my wonderful Blog Readers!
I absolutely adore writing these weekly posts, sharing my understanding of the wisdom teachings through the lens of my daily experiences with all of you.
I’ve created something truly special. Check out this exciting new online event based on the blog, called:
LIVING YOGA in TODAY’S WORLD—
ANCIENT WISDOM FOR MODERN TIMES
I will join our host, Charlyn Anandamai Reihman and together facilitate a juicy conversation about four main themes of the blogs:
  • Non-judgmental awareness
  • Riding the wave
  • Surrender
  • Grace
Each week, we will focus on a few selected blogs that demonstrate these themes. You will receive weekly worksheets to support your practice and integration of the teachings.
The program will be held online,
Mondays from 12:00-1:30,
November 3, 10, 17, & 24.
You will receive the recordings of each session.
Payment is by sliding scale.
Please consider deepening your relationship with the wisdom teachings. Let’s spend some time together in contemplation and in practice
We Human Forgetters
We Human Forgetters
View from Kripalu, 3/21
This blog post is also available on my Facebook page to make sharing it with friends and family easy for you to do.
It is so easy to forget.
It is so easy to get lost
In all of the stuff that is here,
Calling us,
Seducing us,
Magnetizing us
Into more.
More.
More work.
More fun.
More food.
More stuff.
More—money.
Of course.
It is so easy to forget.
What is truly true.
What is really real.
That we are spirit
Wrapped in bodies.
That our minds
Began as perfect allies
To our hearts.
And can return
To that balance.
That we are all truly one.
One breath.
One spirit.
Divided out
Into
Zillions
Of shapes and sizes and colors and
Expressions.
It is so easy to forget.
What is really important.
Kindness
And
Connection.
Maybe that’s it?
Maybe that’s all?
Maybe that’s
Everything…
Kindness
And
Connection.
~~~

What kindness can you offer yourself today?

And from yourself,
What kindness
Can you extend
To
Another?

~~~
To remember:
To have or be able to bring to one’s mind an awareness—
A keeping in memory that may be effortless or unwilled—
A bringing back to mind what is lost or scattered
What a cosmic joke, folks!
We already know.
We are already home.
We just forget,
Alas,
That pesky human dilemma.
There is nothing new here.
This journey of wholeness
Is
A
Returning
Back,
A remembering
Of
What
Is
Right
There—
All along.
~~~

Here’s a fantastic song for remembering.
From Beautiful Chorus.
Oh.  My.  Goodness.
Perfect.

Please see the lyrics (easier on computer than phone)

This is called Remember:

~~~
Dear Friends,
May we honor the forgetting.
May we know
All we need
Is right inside.
When we forget,
May we breathe
With compassion
And kindness.
May our forgetting
Be the doorway home.
With gratitude,
Aruni
