I See Myself in Joy & in Love. I Know Myself. I Am Enough.

07/26/2026 by Aruni

I See Myself in Joy & in Love.

I Know Myself.

I Am Enough.*

You know those memories that just live there, right there, ready to be revived and gallop to the surface of your consciousness? This story happened almost 40 years ago—and I am there in a moment. I remember where I was sitting in that room.

I was new in 12 Step programs. Sitting on this rickety metal folding chair, I chose to increase my already-growing discomfort by obsessively biting my lower lip. Who were all these annoying people and why were they there?

Why I was here—that clearly was not the question. I had nowhere else to be. All other shores of my life seemed to have washed away. This was the only place to be. Or so it seemed.

That woman speaking now always looked so damn comfortable with herself, which pissed me off. She was, as usual, wearing that turquoise, kind of shiny blue madras hoodie; it, along with everything else, it annoyed me.

She was sharing:

In the morning, she said.

She continued:

And in the morning, I thank my Higher Power for whatever might happen in that day.

Her voice trailed off into a spiritual lingering, one I knew I could never, ever obtain. I secretly hated her for that and became incrementally more miserable as the moments unfolded. Interesting now that I wasn’t drinking or drugging, these things they called feelings sprinted uninvited into my awareness.

Her words seemed to awaken me from some fuzzy emotional slumber.

Wait. Who does she think she is?…I thought.

I fumed,

Silently, of course.

WAIT! That’s ridiculous! What she said…..that’s ridiculous.

Having gratitude for what hasn’t happened yet?

That’s—just stupid.

What if shitty things happen?

I fumed and fussed with myself throughout the rest of the meeting. I was angry at her. Angry at them. Angry, perhaps, at myself?

Then, dear friends, a miracle emerged.

New behavior emerged. This was not my idea but I found myself………

After the meeting ended with an embarrassing shared prayer while holding hands, which I hated, I found myself walking toward her, the spiritual madras-garbed-one. She was surrounded by a bunch of spiritual groupies who both scared me and I longed to become. But I stayed. I waited while she continued holding her hallowed court.

Another miracle. This was the first time I talked to anybody before or after a meeting. I realized this well, well after the fact.

Finally, she was done and turned toward me.

I will never forget her eyes.

They were green and frighteningly clear.

She was—cute, confusingly cute up close.

That confused me.

Miracle three.

I stayed. I met her eyes. I guess.

And I stammered, sweaty under my pea jacket, which I had worn to hide my body from the potential visual intrusion from a 12 Step meeting.

Hi, I said once.

Then I said it again,

Hi.

Shit, I’m a moron, I thought.

Ummmm.

Somehow, I found words.

I said:

What did you say? Did you say, You THANK God for what hasn’t happened YET? Did you say THAT?

Yes, she said,

And she continued talking.

Her words seemed to float literally above me. I was unable to grasp any of them. None of her logic, if there was any, stayed with me. None of her thinking about the prayer landed at all. I had zero capacity to retain her words and absolutely no capacity to ask her to repeat it.

But it was the YES that lived with me.

I left that meeting. I guess the YES went with me.

Miracle number 9,763,

I kept going to meetings.

There was simply nothing left to do.

And somehow, I remembered

Not her sparkling green eyes

(Yet here I am, decades later, still talking about it, oops),

But I remembered her YES.

YES, to be grateful for the day that is coming.

YES, we don’t know what might happen.

YES, shitty things happen.

YES, to offer thanks before it unfolds.

YES, gratitude opens the door to humility.

YES, humility opens the door to Grace.

YES, gratitude for all.

YES, eventually.

YES, inevitably.

See, I thought my job as an “adult” (using the term loosely here) was to make sure no bad things happen, to control reality so shit didn’t happen.

Good luck with that.

It didn’t work.

It only made me run faster from everyone,

Drink more,

Drug more,

Trying to keep ahead of life?

The cost of that?

No life. I had no life.

The gift of her YES went with me through the years.

I don’t know the time frame.

When it happened…

But eventually, I started to practice this.

I wrote a prayer.

I said it.in the mornings,

For years.

Here it is:

Thank you for everything You are going to give me in this new day. I know that what You are going to give me is going to be exactly what I need to get closer to You and to get closer to those parts of me that are You.

And that’s what I did.

Eventually, as prayer practices do,

It shifted. It flowed in. It flowed out.

Yet

The YES remains.

~~~
We know gratitude changes the chemistry of the brain.
We know it is, like a gear shift, a changing-up of what’s happening.
We know focusing on gratitude, what is happening, rather than on what isn’t happening, changes
EVERYTHING.
It is a remarkable intervention. We can practice this. Always and forever.
But/and…gratitude…..
Not as a way to transcend our feelings.
Not as a doorway out of the moment.
But as a doorway into the moment.
Right now, it seems that plenty of shitty things are happening.
The air has been smoky. People with power want more of it. People with money want more of it. The rights of all people matter less and less. Things do seem to be unraveling. All true and…..
And, to find the beauty of things,
The bird signing as the dawn unfolds,
The dog rolling on her back,
Belly-up in delight,
The words that are here
Singing their truth,
The people that are right here, too,
Offering their kind hearts.
To find those things in the midst of all of it.
Savoring life’s lessons?
As we can.
As we are able.
Finding the beauty?
Claiming the Grace?
Yes!
Right here
Right now.
What does gratitude mean in your life here in July 2026? Please let me know.
I’ve been playing this song consistently throughout this week, finding great solace in its lovely lyrical repetition. Here is Beautiful Chorus, I am Enough:
~~~

Friends,

One step,

One breath,

One syllable,

One thought

At a time,

As we are able.

May we find our way

From this moment to the next

With ease and grace—as we can.

And when we cannot

May we breathe and relax

And practice coming home.

All blessings,

Aruni

Lions and Tigers and Gratitude, Oh My!

10/05/2025 by Aruni

Lions and Tigers and Gratitude, Oh My!*

I’ve been avoiding gratitude.

As a blog topic, I mean.

I know, I know, the positive impact of gratitude has on us humanoids.

I know, I know, it activates the brain pathways, by releasing dopamine and serotonin.

I know, it enhances mood and motivation.

(Could anybody here benefit from some enhanced motivation?)

I know, I know, gratitude activates the parasympathetic nervous system, calming stress responses.

I know, I know, it settles us, it opens us, it shifts our nervous system response.

And so on, and so forth.

It’s a powerful, profound tool.

Life just feels better when I’m able to land in gratitude.

Clearly it is the softer, easier way, as we say in 12 Step.

Relaxing into and celebrating that which is, rather than lamenting that which is not.

~~~
Several long months ago I found the link to a powerful video, which I am sharing with you today.
I couldn’t bring myself to offer it to you then, because of one line.  One damn line in the song.  The line in the song says:
“I’m grateful…. (Okay, that’s fine.)
For everything.” (Ouch.  This is hard for me.)
I am not grateful for everything.  Not yet.  Not now.
Clearly, I am grateful.
I am grateful, profoundly grateful, for the life I have been given.
I am grateful, profoundly grateful, for the gift of living as a sober woman.
I am grateful, profoundly grateful, for the family I have been given,
For the gifts I have, my voice, my writing, you—all of you.
I am grateful.
I am not grateful for the tyrant that is running our country.
I am not grateful, as I watch our freedoms erode.
I am not grateful, as I watch my LGBTQ+ community come under attack.
I am not grateful, as I watch vulnerable people being put more at risk.
I know, I know—breathing in the suffering, exhaling the compassion.
I know, I know—breathing in the suffering, exhaling the compassion.
And folks, acceptance.
Acceptance of what is.
Being present with what is—that is the core of our practices, right?
~~~

So, gratitude?

Not as a thing, but a verb, an action, a practice.

We practice gratitude no matter what is happening.

Like a muscle, it needs using.

Like a piano, it needs playing.

I think of the words eventually and inevitably.

Perhaps eventually and inevitably, the long arc of the moral universe will bend toward justice, as Dr. King suggests.

Perhaps eventually and inevitably……

The highest will unfold for all.

Our job?

To bear witness.

To be kind.

To practice.

~~~
Here is the powerful video I mentioned earlier, Grateful: A Love Song to the World
By Nimo Patel featuring Daniel Nahmod
~~~

What do you notice in the video?

What touches you?

What can you take away from it, and weave it into your life?

Just ponder.

~~~
Dear Friends,
Breath.
Relax.
Feel.
Watch.
And
Allow.
Let the moment come.
Let it go.
Let the breath fill you up.
Let it release into emptiness.
Let’s continue to practice being
Right here,
With relaxed rigor.
Right here.
Right now.
May we be held,
No matter what
Is happening.
May all beings benefit from our shared words.
Stay blessed,
Aruni
The Bright Shiny Light of Gratitude
01/26/2025 by Aruni
The Bright Shiny Light of Gratitude
This is one of those memories,
So alive and current,
Right here,
Right now,
In this present moment.
I remember where I’m sitting in the room.
The rickety folding chair squeaks beneath me,
Making me even more self-conscious than I already am.
I’m new to these 12 Step meetings.
I see myself chewing my lower lip into a state
Of anxious discomfort.
Who are all these people?
Yet I know why I’m here.
There is nowhere else to be.
Literally.  Nowhere.
Now that cool woman, who wears the sky-blue sparkly hoodie,
The one who always looks so comfortable,
She begins to speak.
I hear her words,
Her voice assured and level:
“And in the morning,
I thank my Higher Power for whatever might happen in that day.
And blah-blah-blah.”
Her voice trails off into a spiritual lingering, one I know I could never obtain.
I instantly and secretly hate her for that,
For her lingering,
Her annoying comfort,
Her damn comment which is stupid–!
Her words awaken me from some fuzzy emotional slumber.
I’m pissed.
Who does she think she is…
I fumed,
Silently, of course.
That’s ridiculous.
Gratitude for what hasn’t happened yet?
That’s—stupid.
What if shitty things happen?
I fume and fuss myself through the meeting.
Angry at her.
Angry at them.
Angry, perhaps, at myself?
Then, dear friends,
The miracle.
Somehow, it is not my idea,
But…
I see myself walking toward her after the meeting
She’s surrounded, of course,
By a bunch of spiritual groupies.
But I stay.
I wait,
Which is clearly
Another miracle.
This is the first time I have spoken to anybody before or after a meeting.
She turns to me,
Her eyes are green and frighteningly clear.
She is—cute, confusingly cute.
Miracle three,
I continue to stay
And
I met her eyes.
I stammer,
Sweaty under my pea jacket,
Worn to hide my body from any
Potential visual intrusion from a 12 Step meeting.
See me,
Don’t see me.
Hi, I say once.
Then I say again,
Hi.
Shit, I’m a moron, I think.
Somehow, I find words.
I say, in a blabber of words:
“What did you say?
Did you say,
You THANK God for what hasn’t happened yet?
Did you say THAT?”
“Yes,” she says,
And continues talking.
I’m not able to hold onto her words
None of her logic,
Her explanation
Is landing.
But it is her YES
That I receive.
It is her YES
That lives with me.
I leave that meeting.
Miracle number 9,763,
I keep going,
The next day
And the next.
Somehow, I remember
Not her sparkling green eyes
(Yet here I am, decades later, talking about it, oops),
But I remembered her YES:
YES, to be grateful for the day that is coming.
YES, we don’t know what might happen.
I love this reading by Melody Beatty.  How exactly right is this:
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It tuns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
~~~
Dear Friends,

How do you practice gratitude?
There are dozens upon dozens of ways.

And it takes time, sometimes.
Looking at the world today,
I must look through the unraveling
To see that which is whole,
That which is Grace,
That which is Always.

Eventually.
Inevitably.

May all beings benefit from our shared words.

Nature. Beauty. Gratitude.*

11/24/2024 by Aruni

Nature. Beauty. Gratitude.*

Maybe I’m
Just old.
Well,
Clearly,
I am.

Time is galloping
Me forward
At breakneck pace
Toward another
Birthday.

Last year’s birthday?
Powerful.
75.
I felt—
Stabilized
In its
Landmark.

This year’s birthday?
Meh.
Not so.

I’m tired
And
I’m anxious
And
I believe in,
Oh, say—
The Department
Of Education,
For example.

Call me crazy.

And yet.
And yet!
The beauty
And
The
Grace.
They
Are
Everywhere.
~~~
I’m remembering 100 years ago
Sitting in a 12 Step meeting—
The topic was “Gratitude”.
I was snickering (oh, so silently, I’m too codependent to snicker so others might hear).
Snickering
And wiggling in my creaky metal folding chair.
The topic, gratitude.
Oh—gratitude—such a basic idea
Such a simplistic,
Unsophisticated practice,
I so haughtily thought.
Forgive me, universe,
Thinking myself too spiritually evolved
To learn anything from gratitude.
After all, I lived in an ashram, you see.
I was evolved.
Right.
Gratitude?
Oh, it’s for beginners,
I silently believed.
Oh.  My.  Goodness.
Forgive me, universe
Again and again.
The arrogance.
My arrogance.
At least it isn’t
Running the show today.
Today I believe—
Gratitude rocks.
Today I believe—
Gratitude
Changes
The
Brain.
Today I believe—
Gratitude
Shifts me from
What isn’t happening,
To the gift
Of
What
Is.
Gratitude is
A truly impactful
Interrupter
Of old patterns.
It is truly
A gamechanger.
~~~
How to practice gratitude?

(OH!  I, as a recovering English teacher, am declaring this word a verb, not a noun.)

Gratitude,
An action.
A doing.
A willful act.
A practice.

My gratitude practice?
Walking with Nik the Dog.
Walking down the dirt road
That frames the wetland
Behind our house.

Walking and praying
And requesting—

Show me the beauty.
Show me the grace.

And EVERY SINGLE TIME
It is revealed.

Every single
Time
I see
The perfection
Of what is
Around me.

Nature.  Beauty.  Gratitude.
They are one breath.

The honking of the geese
Heading home,
As I, too,
Head home.

The light shimmering
On the lake,
Dancing
With
Energy.

Nature.
Beauty.
Grace.
~~~
How can you practice?
A billion ways—
Writing in a gratitude journal—
Talking to friends—
Using your senses—
Acting as if—
And:
MOST IMPORTANTLY…
Gratitude isn’t a protection
From the intensity of our feelings.
Gratitude is a practice
That gives us the
Courage
And
The willingness
To be present
With
What
Is.
~~~
Louie Schwartzberg is a cool guy.
He’s a director and producer, most importantly, a remarkable cinematographer.  Known for his pioneering work in high-end-time lapsed cinematography, he explores our connections with nature in deep and gloriously beautiful ways.

Here is a nine-minute video, called Nature. Beauty. Gratitude.
It is worth our time.

Watch Here

~~~
It’s Alright.
It is, you know.
It’s beyond alright.
It’s perfect, the way it is.
By being with life as it is,
By choosing the power of the moment,
The power of reality,
We open
To the
Love
As well as
The grief.
It seems we can’t have one without the other.
This song has been profoundly comforting for me this week.  My invitation?  Sing it to yourself.
Be both the singer and the recipient of these words.
“As long as you love me.”
It’s Alright by Sam Cooke, master vocalist, often called the Father of Soul, a man with a blessed, blessed voice.
~~~
Friends,

In the midst of all of it,
May we look
For the beauty,
May we look
For the grace.

In the midst of all of it,
May we see
The sunset.

In the midst of all of it,
May we hear the
Call of the geese
Overhead,
Heading home.

As we head home,
May we bring
Kindness
To ourselves
And to
The people
Around us.

May all beings benefit from our time together.

To a Thanksgiving of heart and home,
Blessings,
Aruni

There are Moments, There are Times…

09/08/2024 by Aruni

There are Moments, There are Times…

There are moments, there are times…
Sometimes I just receive them,
Full on,
In my face,
Immersive.

Other times, it is mine to do.
It is mine to willfully
Call them in,
To beckon them
To invite them
To approach me.

The moments show up with
A woosh,
With
A giant blast
Of energy.

They say to me:

Look.
Look what you have given me.

They last a few moments?
They last a few minutes?
They last.
They leave.

Almost always
It is a moment in nature.
In and from and about nature.

Almost always
A scene of breathtaking beauty
Beckons me
To remember.

With the exception
Of one spectacular and specific puppy dog
Who runs like a wild thing in the woods
And
Sleeps, tucked under my arm.

My wild and crazy Nik,
My beloved canine life-mate,
A doorway
To grace and gratitude.

Look.
Look what you have given me.

Wait.
What?

Who is saying what to whom?

Is it me, thanking the universe?
Is it the universe, blessing me?

What I am seeking
Is seeking me.

What we are seeking
Is seeking us.

It is gratitude.

It is the rush and breadth and depth
Of gratitude,
Appreciation for what is,
An exquisite intimacy
With the moment.

Period.
Conversation over.

I knew a fabulous man
Now gone from this earth,
A 12 Step guy
Who use to repeatedly say,

God’s will be done.
Period.

Okay, and I say,

God’s will be done.
Period.

Gratitude.

Here is a six-minute film by Louie Schwartzberg, an American director, producer, and cinematographer. Schwartzberg is recognized as a pioneer in high-end time-lapse cinematography.

As a visual artist, he focuses on connections between humans and the subtleties of nature and the environment.

The narration is written and spoken by the beloved Brother David Steindl-Rast, a 98-year-old author, scholar, and Benedictine monk.  Brother David is loved the world over for his enduring message about gratefulness as the true source of lasting happiness. He is known to many as the “grandfather of gratitude.”

The film is called Gratitude.  It says it all.  In six minutes.

~~~
Dear Friends,
For what are you grateful?
What touches you,
What blasts open your heart
To see the beauty
Around you,
No matter what is happening?
How do you practice gratitude,
The art of seeing the
Grace
Around
You?
How do you create the circumstances
In which
Gratitude
Emerges?
~~~
Dear Friends,

With gratitude for you,
Now and then and always.

With gratitude,
With possibility,
With wise hope.

May all beings benefit from these words, our words shared.

Blessings,
Aruni
