The Woman in Your Life
Is You*
This blog post is also available on my Facebook page to make sharing it with friends and family easy for you to do.
Seven-hundred-and-sixty-five-years ago,
I came out.
I was born
A tiny lesbian
Without
Any clue
That
It
Was
“A thing”,
A possibility,
A world
Of
Itself.
Suffice to say,
Much confusion,
Pain,
Shame,
And so
Very
Much
More
Of
Everything
Unfolded
Until
1973,
When
I left
My
Husband,
Moved
To
New York,
New York,
(We say it twice to celebrate its power)
And
Came
Out.
I found
(Was found by)
The lesbian-feminist-
Separatist
Community.
A trillion things
Unfolded.
Strangely,
Surprisingly,
Oddly,
Coming out
Was not
The
Answer
To
All
Of
My
Problems.
(In Twelve Step,
I practice
“acceptance”
As the
Answer
To all
Of my
Problems…).
But it
Was
the
Beginning,
It
Was
The
Doorway
Back
Home.
~~~
I couldn’t
Understand
The
Theories
Of
Separatism.
I couldn’t
Listen
Or
Even
Concentrate.
Truly,
I
Didn’t
Try.
I was
Stoned
And
Drunk
And
DELIGHTED,
Crushed out
On
Every
Other
Woman,
But
Only,
ONLY
If
On some level,
They were
Unavailable
To
Me.
(Yeah, that’s a thing.)
It was
Painful.
And wonderful.
I LOVED
Women-only
Dances
And
Music
And
Festivals
And
Coffee shops
And
All
Of
It.
NO MEN,
YAHOO.
So sorry
That
I wasn’t
Able
To grok
The
Essence
Of separatism—
The theories,
The
philosophies.
I do
Have
Some
Regret.
Yet
I just
Rode
The
Waves
Of
Its
Energy.
~~~
It would
Be
Years
Till
I
Got
Sober.
That
Changed
Everything.
Men
In
Meetings?
Their words
Brought
My
World
Alive.
Kripalu men?
Kindness
And
Service.
Being
Sober
Changed
It all.
~~~
Yet,
I must say,
Looking around
At our world,
Today,
Our
World
On
Fire.
Perhaps
We
Were
On
To
Something?
More women
In leadership?
More of the
Global
Majority?
???????
The Woman in Your Life (is You)
Alex Dobkin was my first lesbian separatist musician.
Hers was the music and the politics I came out into.
She will always be an icon to me.
And I am sure, to others who were There Back Then.
We lost her in 2021.
May her memory be a blessing.
Rodrigo y Gabriela—
Diablo Rojo
Music of passion,
Of power,
Of
Energy!
Red Devil.
Dear Friends,
The bottom line?
The woman
In your
Life
Is
You.
The man
In your life
Is you.
The work
Is
Meeting
And
Staying
Close
To
Ourselves.
From
That
Place,
We
Connect.
However you identify,
It is you.
All blessings,
Aruni
